Family therapy doesn’t always include all members of a family, but often is with one individual who comes to therapy to better understand their family dynamics and find constructive and healthy boundaries to find peace within a family unit.
Family therapy helps family members, either individually or collectively, understand each other and work through difficult feelings in a safe space. Family therapy focuses on improving the interactions and communication between family members. It is usually used when the family is contributing to a person’s difficulties or when one person’s problems are impacting other family members. We are all born into a family and that moulds how we behave and see the world. As we mature and grow we may need to change the lessons learnt from our family about how the world works and how we behave in the world.
I trained as a family and marital therapist and have over thirty years experience working with families and individuals within family units. Establishing and setting boundaries is a vital part of family therapy and is often the first step to having healthy relationships with other family members. Understanding our roles within a family and how each family member has their own role is fascinating. Working on changing a given role is challenging, yet gratifying. Families are fascinating and interesting and also incredibly complex and at times difficult, psychotherapy can help individuals understand the complexity of families and help them be more authentic. Often, I see families like the inner working of a clock, all intertwined and reliant on each other to work.
“People in therapy often go to therapy to deal with the people in their life who wont go to therapy”
